My Reviews
I listened to this on audio book, and got through it in two days. I really liked it and learned something too, my favorite combination.
A funny an interesting read for any dog lover or anyone who has ever been interested in the Iditarod. Enjoyed it very much and it had me laughing out loud at parts and welling up with tears at others.
A fun, easy adventure with a happy ending.
I really enjoyed this book and it's characters. The themes provide excellent material for bbok club discussion. Highly recommended!
I liked Gruen's attempt, it just seemed like it could have been more. It was a quick and entertaining read.
If I hadn't had the audiobook to intersperse with reading, I don't think I could have gotten through it in one month. The first 300 pages are like a Greek history lesson mingled with the family backstory. And since the author adds in allusions of what's to come, there really aren't any surprises. It was an ok read, but I didn't love it. If it hadn't been a book club pick it probably would have taken me months to get through it.
This is probably one of the best books I have read in a long time. I'm a scientist, and it's about science and I loved it! Logically, you don't have to be a scientist to follow this book. It's written so that anyone can follow the facts and it intermingles the personal struggle of the Lacks family, becoming more focused on them later in the book. A really great read...one you will be glad you spent your time on.
I simply prefer books where something happens and nothing really did in this one. Without having the audiobook to intersperse with the reading I wouldn't have made it through.
I would give this a 2.5/5 if book movement allowed it. I didn't particularly like or dislike this book. I wasn't attached to the charcters in anyway, but it was an easy read. The cultural disparity may be a cause for some of my detachment, but overall I wouldn't recommend it for a book club read.
The Hunger Games is an amazingly creative concept for a book (or series of books). It's not something I would have picked up on my own and I'm so glad it was a book club choice. Well written, fast paced, addictive adventure that will have you heading to the store for the next one the minute you put it down!
not really for a book club. It's very interesting, but also pretty in depth with the science so I don't think it would appeal to every reader. I liked it, but it took me longer to read than most books.
Fun, easy to read and good all around for book clubs. This is not an in-depth story about the lives of the characters, just a general overview of some interesting things that happened to the main character so you don't get emotionally attached, but you do have fun. Almost made me want to leave the city and buy a ranch. Almost.
I think this one was better than the first. I could not put it down and read it in about 10 hours over 2 days. Addictive adventure and fantastic writing. Just read it.
This was my least favorite of the series. I suppose the author does address the very real concept of post traumatic stress and war. However, Katniss spends a significant amount of time being sedated or unconcious, which makes for a slow read to what could have been another fast paced adventure.
Easy read, but not easy to read sometimes, if that makes sense. Difficult subject matter and interesting story lines. A little slow at times but overall I liked it.
I thought this book was pretty good for a YA novel. At first I hated the feeling of reliving high school and having this inside look at the mean girls. After the initial story line gets laid down, I found it much more relatable. The lessons are obvious and some of it is hard to read, but in a way, it gives you hope that deep down, there's a decent person inside everyone.
Good book for chic-lit (not my normal genre). I learned a little bit at the end but keep the kleenex handy.
I liked it, but it lagged in the middle for me. Using the audio book to supplement got me going again and interested in FLW's work. Unfortunately, a premature search on the internet to get a glimpse of his buildings spoiled the ultimate ending for me. So don't do that if you aren't already familiar with his story.
I loved the fact that it ignited the desire to know more about FLW's life and architecture. I spent several hours researching homes he built and finding those that are closest to me. Perhaps one day I will take some tours as I am now more interested in his architecture. Worth the read...I'd give it 3.5/5 if BKMT allowed half stars.
As a dog lover, I loved this book. But moreso, as a human, I loved this book. I can only hope my dogs admire and root for me the way Enzo does for Denny. Superb!
This was a very interesting read. We tend to think of people who lived in the time of Hemingway as so much more old fashioned, but this novel sheds light on the forward-thinking minds of that generation. It made me want to learn more about Hemingway and his life, loves and literature. I'd like to one day get around to reading his works. Definitely worth a read and well written.
This book was pretty fluffy, and I expected that from the subject matter. It doesn't generate deep discussion, but some interesting insights and experiences from club members. I'd give it 2.5 stars if I could. I was just ok.
Beautifully written, funny, smart, introspective. This book puts some wonder back in the world. There were only a few parts where it lagged a bit for me. I loved it, but I don't know if I would recommend it to a pregnant woman that were even the tiniest bit nervous.
Fast-paced and funny as well as creepy, this really shouldn't be catagorized as Horror simply because of the authors' background. It was solid, typical Koontz, but not my favorite. Should probably get 2.5 stars.
The writing style of this book is very different and creative. It takes a little getting used to, but once you're into it, it is very engaging. I can see why some people didn't like the narration, but I think it would have totally changed the story without it. I don't think this book should be catagorized as YA simply because the main character is a young girl. This is a story for all ages and is deserving of the awards it received. It also generated good discussion at book club.
John Irving is not easy reading. I don't recommend this for casual book clubs, but it could be good if you enjoy longer books that produce in depth discussions. It's overall, a very bizarre love story that spans almost 40 years of the characters' lives.
