My Reviews
Of the 10 books our book club read in 2010 there was an overwhelming consensus that The Help was the most addictive read. Very engaging, interesting and inspirational! Looking forward to seeing the movie version of the book in 2011!
The first half of the book was slow but the last half was very interesting. Overall, a very good read.
I had high hopes of really loving this book since it came highly recommended but I found it to be simply a good read. It's unique in that it's written from the little boy’s (Jack’s) perspective but for the same reason I didn't feel engrossed in the story b/c a 5 yr old's POV lacks the descriptive details that typically draw me in as if I'm enduring the character's experiences as they do. Also, for me the emotional "shock value" of this story was lost in the fact that the world heard a very similar (real life) story in 2009, when Jaycee Dugard was found after living 18 years in captivity. And the 2008 case of the Austrian father who locked his daughter in a cellar for 20+ years and had several children with her.
Overall, ROOM opened with a strong, solid story but towards the end my interest waned as it sounded all too familiar to the true crime accounts recently in the news; I looked forward to reaching the last page.
Very Engaging!!! One of the best books I've ever read! Can't wait to see the movie!
I really enjoyed the book... the characters, the drama, the parallels and themes but I found the end to be pretty unconvincing. For Bee to describe in detail various ways in which she would kill herself in given situations due to the instilled fear of "the men coming" for her again, I thought it was unbelievable that she would ever go back to the place she feared the most.
Although most of the women in book club found this to be a good read I found it to be very slow; in fact I couldn't finish the book b/c I was so bored. It was interesting to hear about the hardships and of Kimberly & her mother moving from Hong Kong to New York and the differences between to two cultures however, I stopped reading 3/4 of the way through the book b/c there was no suspense, the author never made me "want more" as I could easily put it down after a few chapters and not go back to it for days. According to others in my book club the end was very interesting but I prefer reads to be interesting from the beginning so that I'm eager to find out how it will end.
