My Reviews
This Pulitzer Prize winning novel follows in the steps of the "Goon Squad" but is indeed more personal. The book has many vignettes of life, not all of which are explained to the point of exhaustion and may become too numerous to keep contained in the mind, but are representative of what life is or can become.
The juxtaposition of lives through four generations was an absorbing comparison of moralities where we had to agree that you cannot accurately judge people by the times they lived in. Acceptance (or not) is a personal judgement which can be reevaluated over changing times. The question that caused most discussion concerned whether family secrets should be revealed or remained hidden as we shared amongst ourselves our own family secrets.
Accurate depiction of the times and lives on the outer islands of America, outside the mainlife.
The percieved differences between an indentured servant and a forever-slave are focussed in this treatment of difficult time period in American history.
