Opens our eyes...

...to the realities of tens of thousands of others. Gets us out of our comfort zone. Goes far beyond the little we receive in sound bites.

What a way to learn and love history!

This should be made into a modern movie, reflecting all the facts that have come to light since the older, more fictional films were made about this incredible story.

Every Woman Should Read Infidel!

As well as everyone else. Ayaan Hirsi Ali tells it like it is, intelligently, forthrightly, with passion yet with clarity. I want to meet her, a new hero of mine!

Alex and Irene bowl over what scientists and all of us used to think about animal intelligence!

How can the reader not fall in love with Alex and be inspired by Irene? As it was said on a PBS Nova 2011 program about their research, "bird brain" is no longer a criticism but forever more a compliment! Now I want to read Irene's (Dr Pepperberg's) book which is a collection of her research papers. Please help Irene, Griffin, and Wart to continue their work by supporting the Alex Foundation!

Relevant to TODAY

Addresses issues we wish (or pretend) no longer existed. Excellent use of main character and her search for understanding of her own personal and family challenges as a lens through which to become engaged with the larger issues in school, community, and nation.
Excellent portrayal of people, places, and processes in a southern US small town!

Don't let the title fool you!

I learned so much, despite (or because of) gaps in my knowledge of the sciences, history, and religious history!

Nothing to envy: the Perfect Title!

We who do not live in such a repressive regime-controlled country as North Korea truly have Nothing to Envy and Everything to Appreciate.
Demick awakens us through her deft weaving of individual defectors' stories to the horrific reality of their North Korean bare existence. She educates us about North Korean history, culture, and politics without ever making us want to put the book down (or remove the headphones, in my case, since I listened to the book)!
This true story is important; everyone needs to know about it!
