Wonderful Read! It would make an awesome movie! Our members were busy casting the rolls. The story was very insightful of the time in the 60's when black woman were "helpers" in the homes of young, white, southern families.
First half of the book was a very insightful and I thought it was so interesting how the author wrote it from a 5 year old stand point. What was not convincing was the second half the story. It was like the author felt she needed to hurry and tie up loose ends. Five year old Jack being taken to the mall with Aunt and Uncle not likely to have happened, his living with Grandmother and even the escape seemed too far fetched for someone never leaving his mother's side.
One of the best books that our book club has read and we have read over 150 books!
My book club read this awesome book and fell in love with the language of this book! So beautifully written, captured feel of small town USA, and wonderfully developed characters! All members LOVED it! AND it was selected as \\\"1 Book South Dakota 2015\\\" in which our state wanted as many people to read & discuss. Just happened that the author was in our city of Rapid City @ library to lead a discussion of his book. LOVED THIS BOOK!
This is a beautifully written book about a woman sentenced to die. The family that is \"elected\" to \"house\" her before sentencing learns the true meaning of her character. So sad but a wonderfully written story. My book club absolutely LOVED it. There\'s a lot to discuss in this book!
