My Reviews
This book was a great book club discussion book.
It brought up alot of issues especially being a immigrant, first born american. And not wanting to loose your culture. There was only one person in our group who disliked the book. She had said she did not know what the big deal was to just change the name. You don't need to go to court. Just change it yourself. She hates her original name so she just shortened it. Personally I can't see what Gogol would change his name to. Go, I don't thaink that would work for him. I would reccommend it to all book clubs. It does relate to everyone not just be Indian but anyone who has had to relocate even to another region of the US.
This book had charm. It was about family relationships, when the parents get older, and your children move out. And the family dynamics which includes, Rose the matriach. She always like to manipulate everyone and use the jewish guilt on you.
It was stereotypical, but all families have problems. I don't care who you are. I enjoyed this book. Some of our members said, so what. But, most everyone could relate to this.
The book was great. The book goes back and forth of the narrator. He is 93 living in a nursing home. He's mind, and he's memory is not what it used to be. He then talks about he's past when he is about to finish vet school by taking the exams. He decides to quit, before taking the last exams. He is devastated, he's Mom and Dad are run off the road and killed. He then runs away and joins the circus. He meets up and joins the circus. He falls in love, with Marlena the ring master's wife. He is abusive to her and the animals. He goes back and forth to him as a old man and then when he is young.
The bad part of the book is the animal abuse, and domestic abuse. That was hard to swallow. I am sure that did happen, and is still happening to animals now. The book will be highly discussable. We can talk about animal rights and spousal abuse, old age, etc. Just lovcd the book....
Our book club loved discussing this book.
I did not think I would like this book.
But, it was enjoyable and immersed with many different characters. I thought it would be a beach read but it was more literary than that. I would recommend this to all book clubs.
I would recommend this book. It is good book for discussion.
If You know someone who is a teacher in high school, I reccommend that you give them a copy. The book is about bullying and teenage popularity. The book seems like non-fiction. Until you get to the end, it has a precular twist.
It is hard to read especially if you have children in high school.
To Kill A Mockingbird, was a good book for a book club.
Alot to discuss, lots of insight and great discussion with our book club dispite the small number of 6 of us. We normally have 18. The book I thought always had to deal with the trial of a black man. But, realizing after I read the book it was about the coming of age in the south. And the great warmth and respect the children had for their father, Atticus. Atticus, never spoke down to his children rather talked to them as if they were adults and never lied to them.
Lee Harper, knew what she was doing when she wrote this. You think this is a simple story, but it was really multi layers but you as the reader did not realize this. We also saw the movie, before we discussed the book for added pleasure.
