My Reviews
Another portion of American History is revealed through this romantic story of two young people, from different cultural backgrounds, caught up by anti-Japanese sentiment during World War II.
Same writing technique as Sarah's Key and The Island in that author switches time zones often. This is beginning to annoy me. Be original if you are a writer. Too much time spent on telling the fairytales. Not enough character development.
None of the group loved it. But the group did find Spinalonga to be very interesting. We felt that there could have been more development of many of the characters in the book and also some felt the book dull and slow moving. Our discussion led us to discussing Aids in the 80's and 90's and our reaction to those who were affected by it. We also discussed our parents' generation and how they tended to keep things so much more secretive than we do these days.
