My Reviews
Great writing, Not only was it a story about Henrietta but about modern medicine and science. One of the best books I ever read - I really learned a lot
Our group enjoyed the author's style of writing on a serious subject. Humorous yetthe book was insightful about one's grieving process and family dynamics/bonding.
Our book club really liked this book and would definitely recommend it. The writing was excellent and we all felt we were inside Alice's head.
Most of us really liked his books. We enjoyed reading about the quirks of the sisters and there was many topics to be discussed for book club. Some felt their lives were over the top.
Only 1 person in our group liked this book, the rest of us didn't enjoy it all at. We found it confusing, with too many characters who had very little in common with each other and weren't developed. Be prepared to think of the book as short stories. Different character and main themes did lead to a lively discussion but overall we wouldn't recommend it to others
Our group had a lot to talk about from this book - culture of indians, treatment of women, US government. some of us found it a little slow in the middle but all felt it was a worthwhile read.
Our group really enjoyed this book. The book was interesting and an easy read. We loved discussing the characters and life in the early 1900s.
I find that Lisa Genova is wonderful in developing characters so you are actually experiencing what they are! In a fictional format I feel like she teaches me about a subject - in this case the brain injury Left Neglect. Not only informative, a great story about human spirit, family dynamics and making choices about what is most important in your life. I would definitely recommend it! If you liked this book read Still Alice.
Fast read, had some great topics to discuss and ponder. Are you the same person you were 10 years ago? Do you like who you've become, what would you change? I found this a fun read. If your book club enjoys lighter topics this one is a winner.
Easy to read on a serious subject and time in our American history. We loved reading the different points of view from the characters. This book hits it all marriage, women's rights, racism, parenthood, brotherhood, friendship. You won't be disappointed.
If your group wants something on the lighter side, I definitely recommend this book. Makes you think about the person you are and who you used to be (how quickly we forget). Entertaining and will lead to a great discussion with the ladies.
Our group found this an easy read, but slow to get into the story. Good discussion on one's purpose following the book. We all agreed that dog owners/lovers enjoyed this book more than others.
Our book club really liked this selection. There is much to discuss on the topics of friendship, family loyalty, feminism, cultural differences/similarities...The author weaves twists into the book so you arent' really sure how it will end up.
Loved it! Wonderfully written love story wrapped around the holocaust. Educational about what occurred in the part of Europe.
Everyone in our book club thought this book was a winner. The fictional story of a Korean picture bride is interwoven into true life events of Hawaii during the early 1900s. This lead to a great discussion about immigration, racism, womens rights, parenting and a whole host of other topics. Like Molokai, Alan Brennert does not disappoint!
Inspiring story about 2 unlikely friends. I really enjoyed their story and feel I'm a better person for reading it. Any one can make a difference and no one knows what goes on behind closed doors. Great discussion topics in this book
Our book club members had mixed reviews about this book. Many had difficulty believing in the characters and the book was slow. However all agreed this book had excellent discussion topics about morality, the mentally disabled community and institutions in the 1960s to today.
Easy to read and get into. I loved the characters
I love historical fiction but barely made it through this book. Boring characters and a story that was unconvincing. A real disappointment- based on the premise - I thought it would be really good
I really enjoyed this book, it was interesting and moving quickly. It was very insightful to the time period, what it meant to be an American hero and women's roles during that time. I felt I really got to know Charles Lindbergh, although it was cross between biography and novel. Alot could be discussed in a book club.
I found this book fascinating and very insightful into the world of FLDS. Hard to understand/believe that this lifestyle exists in 21st century here in the US. The book is long and jammed with facts and details. We had a great discussion about religion, women's rights and the law from this book.
written for young adults and a great book for 12-14 year olds, all ages will like this book. lessons about friendship, seeing beyond what is on the surface and family. I wish everyone met an Auggie in their life - I cannot wait to share this book with my teenager.
Everyone in our book club enjoyed this book. We found the characters interesting and well developed. Most of us were unaware of orphan train in our history so we found it educational as well. the book is fast paced and not really any 'slow spots'
More than half of our book club members did not finish this book. Overall we rated it 1.5 out of 5.0. We found it boring & written without emotion. It does not follow a story line and with so many girls it was hard to follow. All were looking forward to this book and topic and we were all very disappointed
Overall we found to book to be OK, in contrast we liked Gone Girl much better. It did lead to a lively discussion about marriage, commitment, denial, etd. and we had a lot of laughs. Many of us found we were skimming the books It wouldn't be a book we would recommend to others
Our bookclub found this book a little slow at times but overall a worthy book for discussion. We rated it 2.6 out of 4.0
I enjoyed the story , would be good for teens. There are much better 'hard life' teen stories out there - Glass Castle & The Orphan Train. For adults I'd recommend those titles over this one.
everyone in our bookclub enjoyed this book. It was fast reading with good characters that led to a good discussion about parenting and people with special needs.
Our book club really enjoyed this book. Although about a slavery it is not an intense book - more about the characters. Well written, good characters which led to a very good discussion. I started off a little slow but then it really moved along
It was a quirky story but I enjoyed it. I liked the characters and I think it was cleverly written.
I really wanted to love this story, but I thought it was just OK. I really like historical fiction but this felt very fictional to me. I thought the story was really unrealistic.
Our book club really liked this book. Interesting characters and story. There were some parts that felt unrealistic but it didn\\\'t affect the overall enjoyment of the book. Good discussion too.
Overall the book club liked this book. Fast read which led to interesting discussion including women\'s rights in the early 20th century. Some parts a bit dramatic or over the top, but overall we enjoyed it.
From our book club - while we liked the potential story line we felt the characters and story wasn't well developed and there were a lot of pieces that weren't necessary while others we were wondering about
We rated it a 4.4 out of 5. Good story with interesting characters. Led to an interesting book discussion on topics we did not expect. Not a heavy/deep book.
All in our group found this "OK" . Fast read but nothing really to discuss. learned afterwards it was young adult, really better for the audience
Short book with some interesting parts to discuss but overall we found the characters and the story line undeveloped. No one in our bookclub liked it
Everyone in our book club thought this book was a winner. We rated it 4.5 Great characters and story with lots going on .
OUr book club was disappointed by this book. While she is an inspiring individual we felt the writing poor and lots questions were unanswered.
liked the characters and the story. Many different themes weaved in - immigration, young love, single parent, etc. I recommended it to several people . Her other book The Language of Flowers was also great - really like this authors style
Everyone in our bookclub loved it. Great writing and character development . Takes place in the early 1900s - great historical fiction. Lots to discuss
Author really develops multiple storylines to keep you intrigued and guessing how it will end up throughout the book. Many different topics for discussion. Everyone in our book club liked it. FYI it's a little long . several of us listened to it on audio and enjoyed it.
Some in our bookclub liked it better than others overall rated it 3.6 out of 5. All agreed interesting time period but characters could have been better developed
Our bookclub was split on this book. Some found it heartwarming & liked the story. Others found it painfully boring . Character development was weak.
Our bookclub had mixed reveiws on this book. Some found it engaging while others didn't love the characters. Overall it was a quick read, and having been a true a story made it more interesting.
Very good characters and story line. A lot of topics to discuss from AIDS, parental/sibling relationships, first love.... Everyone in book club liked it we rated it 4.3 out of 5.
beautifully written, a story for our current generation. it's ok to be different and everyone should be accepted.
a little slow moving at first, but really enjoyed the character development and story.
