It didn't deliver
This was a story not often told of the Japanese internment camps in the USA. The story can be slow at times but it is sweet and optimistic. Looking at life through the eyes of a teenager and again through the same eyes of a sixty year old.....what did they learn? What feelings never wavered?
The best part of the book is the first half. I would of liked the author to have delved into the signature of all things more deeply--that is an interesting topic. Gratuitous sex scene was not needed.
This book is about a happy child, who becomes a withdrawn teenager, who then evolves into an unhappy adult. ( I feel sad for the poor piece of beautiful art that has to go for the ride with him)
The end.
Lots of subject points to talk about at a book club meeting.
Look through the peephole into 3 lives in 1938. The time era is interesting and lively. This is an easy read that transports you to that time vividly set in New York City. cheers
Dr. don Tillman is Dr. don Knotts with aspergers
Don breaks out of his rigid mindset- not by reprogramming but by unprogrammed love. His innocence in being in love is refreshing.
A strong female character, depicting a woman who is modern and controversial in the 1920-1930's. Her Hard life lessons are springboards to a fascinating life.
A coming of age book set in a small town southwest of Duluth MN. Told by the 13 year old boy-Frank who along with his brother Jake react to a series of deaths that took place the summer of 1961.
Grace is experienced but not explained to these boys who try to work out the how's and whys of the deaths.
Fortunately the book takes place in the summer so the characters are outdoors a lot and summer activities are abundant. Anyone with small town memories of the sixties will even more appreciate the simple life as told in this book.
