My Reviews
The book is full of good information and ideas on sustainable and healthy food. But I knew much of that information already and I felt the book was too preachy/teachy and presented a very utopian way of life that most people cannot attempt. However, I have resolved to find little ways that I can shop more in line with the ideas presented.
One thing I took away from this book was the importance of paying attention to what is right now. It's something I've been working on for quite awhile and it's good to have another reminder and new metaphor - "listen to the river".... "Listen harder."
Another important point was when Siddhartha stopped striving for peace and purpose, that was when he found it.
I love reading books that make me think about awareness and identity. This book explores those topics from the points of view of two characters who have great depth.
If you just want a good story though, this book is not for you. One of my book club members didn't like or finish the book because of that. It also takes awhile to "get into it".
Other members found it very moving and disturbing. I didn't find much that really showed the inner lives of the characters. The focus was on what they did, not so much who they were. There was only one statement that I found I'd like to hang onto:
"May I never experience all that it is possible to get used to." I didn't think that any real change occurred as a direct consequence of their actions.
I also became frustrated because it was difficult to remember the year and the narrator of each chapter; especially since I had to read short sections at a time due to my schedule. It would have been helpful for the publisher to have that information at the bottom of every other page.
It is not a book I will keep on my shelf.
