The Book Club

This is a great first book for new book clubs with women in thier 40's and 50's. I don't think younger women will appreciate it as much. The characters are very realistic and what they experience is very believable. I think most women today can identify with these characters, and perhaps make some life-changing decisions toward happiness and satifaction with one's self.

I really enjoyed this book, and I think the discussion at our meeting will flow. We are going to go see the movie as a group the weekend following our club meeting.

I loved this book and will be recommending it to my book club. I thought the beginning was a little slow, but nessasary to deliver the full story. I am glad I kept with it, once I got past the beginning, I could not put it down.

Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale

I was very dissapointed in this book. I did not find the the writing to be of superior quality, and the characters were not developed in a way that made me connect to them or really care about them. If this had not been selected by our book club to read, I would never have bothered to finish it. Having said this, however, I will say we still had a good club meeting discussing it. Perhaps readers that are really into Mermaids will enjoy it more.

I absolutely loved this book, and so did all the members of our book club. Growing up in Pennsylvania during the time this book was written, I had no real idea how much segregation was still in the southern parts of our country. I think this book is a tribute to all those who took part in the civil rights movement. The characters were so real, and the situations so believable, I felt like I was a part of it all. THis is a great book!

A great pick for clubs looking for something a little different!

I enjoyed this book after I got into it and knew who all the characters were. It is amazing how the characters came to life when you only learned about them thru letters. It reminded me of the present, how people meet and get to know each other on the internet, but for some reason, letters seem more personal. Maybe we should all go back to the "snail mail". How exciting would it be to get something other than bills and junk mail!

Every member of our group liked this book. It was interesting and historically correct. We found the story to be very believable during the time frame it happened. We were all a little sad that Henry and Keiko didn't try to find each other sooner. The ending was perfect, it lets you wonder if they were able to re-connect after all those years.
