The Shipping News: A Novel by Annie Proulx

A journey of personal growth for a deeply caring man.

Quoyle's journey begins with his decision to return to the community in Newfoundland where his father was born. It's a place where he can find new friendships and committed relationships in a small closely-knit community.

Prouix' characters are interesting and quirky - each has a distinctive "voice" and contribution to Quoyle's personal journey.

Underlying theme of survival dynamics.

Who are the group "leaders" in survival situations? Interesting roles evolved in this story of 4-1/2 months of captivity. Relationships emerged between captors and captives.

The "action" in the beginning of this story was actually (for me) the least interesting part of this book. It started slow for me, but about 1/3 into it, I got hooked into the individual stories and evolving relationships.

Incredible perspective of life in Saddam's circle.

What do people do to survive when they're under the control of a mad man? Why didn't they simply walk away? They knew what would happen to the family members they left behind.

I didn't love it as much as I thought I would.

The Blessing Stone by Barbara Wood

The book is divided into historically-based sections - like James Michener did in his books. Some sections were more interesting than others. If you're a Michener fan this will be a disappointment.
