My Reviews
Inspiring true story of Greg Mortenson, part-time nurse and mountain climber, turned school builder in impoverished areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The writing is wonderful and the adventures he had in achieving his goals were fascinating. The book opened my eyes as to why so many young Muslims in those countries have turned to extremism. They don't have many options on ways to make money and no future to look forward to. Building schools that do not teach extremism and educating these children give them hope and is the way to prevent them from turning to extremist teachings. I strongly recommend this book!
This book started out slow for me but it picks up and was very suspenseful in the second half. Abby's husband, John, dies while deployed in Iraq. She soon finds out that it may have been someone in his platoon that killed him. The story covers lots of different relationships: Abby and her in-laws, how the in-laws and their children relate with each other, and different people in the military. People in the story have different views on whether the US military should be in Iraq. Along with the relationships is the story of Abby and her friends Suz and Flint digging into what really happened to John. While you learn early on who the killer is, the suspense is finding out how crazy the guy is and what he is capable of. There is also a small supernatural aspect to the story which was a little hokey for me but it didn't ruin the story. I stayed up late to finish this one.
I loved this book! It was over-the-top but it was SOOO funny. Parts of it were touching and parts were just crazy. Jeanne has a nervous breakdown after the death of her mother and finding out that her boyfriend has been cheating on her with many women. After "assaulting" her boyfriend, she is ordered to take Anger Management classes. The AM classes and the people she meets in AM are my favorite part of the story. There is romance in the story, too.
This book started out a little slow but I enjoyed it. I knew nothing about the 1893 World's Fair when I started reading. Found this book to be very informative and liked the anecdotes about Thomas Edison, Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill Cody, Frank Lloyd Wright and other famous people. The story of H. H. Homes, the serial killer operating in Chicago at the time of the World's Fair, added intrigue. It is amazing to me all of the work they put into the buildings of the World's Fair for a 6 month run and then left them to ruin after it was over.
