My Reviews
I found the book hard to put down, although I really didn't like any of the characters. I still got hooked in the drama.
The adjective that was used by more than half of our members during our meeting was "rich." Definitely worth the time it will take, and every member that wasn't through with the book was encouraged to finish it. The book is set in the first half of the 20th century in Spain, which is not a time that anyone had studied or taught in school, even though there are multiple generations of teachers in the group. One member listened to an audio version, and said it was easier to get through the Spainish names and not get bogged down in the vividly descriptive prose.
Recommended by many outside the bookclub as one of the best books ever, but as a group we didn't think so. Only a couple group members finished it, and the overall consensus was that it wasn't good enough to finish. The characters were fun, but discussion drifted quickly to other topics besides the book.
Interesting summer read. One of the more thoroughly discussed books by our group, but no one will read it a second time. Characters not particularly likeable but we could identify with all of them.
While very well written, the book jacket description wasn't very accurate. In my book club's opinion, it was a novelette with 3 random extra short stories thrown in. Club members hoped to be inspired or have their own mother daughter experiences validated. Definitely not the case here.
