My Reviews
I have a sarcastic sense of humor and find dry humor funny. This book is totally unbelievable. The way in which she portrays herself as a child is utterly riduclous. I have a niece and a nephew aged 9...trust me their conversations are not even remotely similar to how she "remembers" hers. Life is too short to read drivel.
Addictive story with characters that stay with you. Gave us much to talk about at our monthly bookclub meeting!
Fun, easy read. The dog training aspects were interesting as I am a dog owner and animal lover. The humor given to the male lead character made me chuckle out loud.
Slow start to the book. I didn't love the book but I did like it. The storyline kept your interest enough to get to the finish, twist at the end.
Characters are well-written and very colorful. The description of the squares and the city of Savannah took me back to my visit there. The story is interesting but the storyline is slow moving. Overall, I liked it and would recommend it but it is not a fast read.
I really liked this book. A couple of twists in the book. The characters are odd and quirky but that's part of why I liked the book. As I got into the story it was hard for me to put aside.
Right from the start I disliked the first short story. I thought for sure that there would be one story in the book that I would like but that is not the case. They are all difficult to read, gloomy and some depressing. One bookclub member out of 12 liked the book - the rest thumbs down!
This book generated lots of discussion and a few suggestions on alternative endings and thoughts on how the book differed in direction from the way our readers thought it was going to go. I have been in bookclub 10 years and have read a lot of books - this is well worth the read.
I loved this book! The characters stay with you long after you have finished reading. This book made me laugh and cry with Auggie. Toward the end there were a few chapters where I could foresee what was going to happen, but I didn't care. I cheered for him the whole way through!
I'll admit it took me a good 80-90 pages to get into the story. I felt like I was plodding through. The story finally hooked me. The last 2/3 of the book flowed much more quickly. A love story that transcends time.
This book generated a lot of conversation. Everyone that read it loved it. For me, it was an okay read. Some of the profiles of the wineries and the history behind them were very interesting, others not so much. We did enjoy sampling the wine though!
I read the first 50 pages, skipped around the following chapters. It's a short book but it's long and boring.
this book is so slow and boring. I have had the book for over a week and am on page 56. I look at it and think I\'ve got to read this for bookclub. Then I think, I\'d rather poke myself in the eye!
I really like how characters were interwoven in the story of another. They are all imperfect no matter if they live on the upper east side or among drug dealers and hookers. Rich character development.
This books grabbed me from the beginning. It kept me guessing throughout and surprised me toward the end. Although, the last chapter was a bit of a \\\"Hollywood\\\" ending. Great read...one I didn\\\'t want to put down.
At first I thought...another book on the Holocaust. I dragged my feet getting it. When I finally did, I was hooked from the first chapter! At the heart of the story I was on the edge of my seat reading. I highly recommend this read.
Definitely odd characters but I was interested enough to see it through. Some of those mothers in the book clearly could have been written about some of the mothers in my city. That's not a compliment, unfortunately!
What a slow, boring, pointless book. My New Year\\\'s resolution was to read all of the books selected by my bookclub. I plodded my way through this one as I did not want to start our breaking my resolution...that\\\'s the only reason why I read it. I would equate this to sitting through hours of home movies of somebody else\\\'s family - whom you do not know and have no interest in knowing.
The story was interesting enough to keep me reading until the end. Did not generate much conversation at our meeting. It's a book I would say is fine. The author certainly understood the thoughts of a child - you can tell he is an educator.
Likebale characters - even when you don\\\'t want to like them. I laughed out loud, shed a tear and thourougly enjoyed this book. Lots for our bookclub to talk about. Very enjoyable read!
Thought provoking. Mixed opinions regarding what would you do? Generated conversation in our bookclub. Not everyone agreed!
Long, boring drivel. If it weren't for a New Years resolution to read every book for bookclub...this would have been returned to the librart quickly! This author was not about to make me break my resolution.
typical summer read. Did not generate much to talk about within our meeting. Predictable
humorous, thought provoking, insightful. Will provide any bookclub lots to discuss.
Our bookclub loved this book. We have all known or been the girl who doesn't fit in. It takes you back to high school and make you want to protect Eleanor.
This is a nice, easy read. I felt like I knew the characters. AJ is a quirky little fellow but likeable as you get to know him. Everyone at our bookclub meeting enjoyed the book and thought it was a good selection.
This was a book I loved to hate. I hated some of the characters but did not hate the storyline! It also reinforces not the old saying to not judge a book by it's cover. I had made assumptions about some characters based solely on the train ride. My assumptions changed as I got to know them through out the story.
The books is very dark almost disturbing. It was a stretch of the imagination rolling the ending up in a neat bow.
I read 100 pages of 514. I just could not get into this story or care about it. It took me a week to make 100 pages.
Personally, there was more detail than needed to move the story along. It is worth the read and it did not end as I expected. I read the first 180 pages and then jumped around to get the story moving. Provided a good discussion.
Whether you have children or not you can still reach a connection through the various stories of motherhood or being a parent's child. Fast read. Some stories a sad other heartwarming and some humorous. It has something for everyone.
This book is slow, wordy and boring. Life is too short. Don't waste your time.
Well written. Lots of conversation at our bookclub and a few ear marked pages for discussion and pulling quotes from the book. You won't be disappointed.
The story follows the lead character Ana on her journey through the war. I didn't hate it but out of 12 bookclub members, 2 read it and 2 had it but didn't crack it open and the rest either didn't bother or were part way through.
Although I had a difficult time feeling badly for her, the story was very interesting and I hope her journey to wellness continues.
The book grabbed me from the beginning. Normally, skipping between time periods is not my favorite format for a novel. I was invested from the start in both characters and could not wait to keep tabs on both of their stories. Had to hold myself back not to read ahead to see how it turned out!
I read 60 pages and gave up. I was not invested enough in the character to find out why he created a whole new identity. Did not give our bookclub much to discuss.
I actually divided the number of pages in the book by the number of days until my meeting just to make sure I didn't have to read too many pages in 1 day. I made it to p.187....sent it back to the library. I couldn't have cared less about this story or characters.
This book is a bit unnerving and I wanted to read ahead just to make sure it worked out the way I hoped! It definitely kept me interested through to the end and the end was gratifying!
It starts out a little dark and I thought...not sure I like this but the story turns and hooks you in. Great discussion for your bookclub
This book generated lots of opinions and conversation. Great selection for any bookclub meeting.
Loved this story. The characters stick with you. Totally enjoyable story and I loved Arthur!
Great character development. I was 140 pages in before the heart of the story unfolded. This is no A Man Called Ove.
This book is painstakingly mind numbing. It should be titled Lincoln in the Boredom.
The storyline is certainly not enjoyable as it is very difficult to imagine this happening. There were times, I said aloud....why don't you say something. I can forgives the girls as they were children and terrified of they mother, even into adulthood. it is hard to believe that someone didn't notice something and say something.
