My Reviews
I've read this 4 times, and it remains my very favorite book of all time. It's a witty, hilarious fictional account of the missing 30 years of Jesus', erm Joshua's life. It'll make you laugh out loud over and over and leave you feeling like you understand. It's not a religious book, although it definitely still has an excellent message. I think it's even funnier if you have a religious background - then you'll really get the jokes.
I cannot recommend this book more highly. I've made everyone I know read it, and they've all loved it, too.
This book has made my top 5 all time favorites list. I laughed, I marveled, I loved, and boy did I cry. The narration by Death was such an interesting way to develop the story, and I found the characters to be deep and lovable. You find yourself feeling part of this family and joined in their struggles. I literally cried uncontrollably throughout the last 5 or 6 chapters, but I couldn't imagine a more fitting ending to this tragic story. It's a tale of courage and love, and I'd highly recommend it to everyone.
I enjoyed the read. The story was romantic and interesting, with a premise that is inventive and new. Although I didn't enjoy all the time-jumping, the story climax happens a bit too early, and the ending was a bit of a disjointed, thrown-together 'happy ending' of sorts, the story definitely did hold my attention. Recommended for a fun, not-too-intense read.
I loved this story. Although there are a lot of comparisons to X-Men, I found it to be new and brilliantly written. I can't wait for the sequel in 2013. Definitely a great read if you want to get completely lost in another world and absorbed by lovable characters.
I wasn't a big fan of this book, nor was anyone in our bookclub. We found the 'magical realism' to be less than magical or realistic. The story didn't make much sense and didn't have much of a point. The writing style was more like that of a middle school writing contest with lots of 'oh, and by the way I forgot to tell you that blah blah blah happened two chapters ago. You need that information now". Not a fan, wouldn't recommend.
