My Reviews
I actually didn't know about the events described in this book. It was riveting, in my opinion. Informative and moving. I would highly recommend it, especially to readers who like "historically-based" literature.
This book inevitably asks the reader to look at their own lives and ask "remember one amazing thing." Then, it answers with "we all have one." This writer is one of my favorites and truly knows the art of weaving a provocative tale. I really enjoyed this book!
This was a massively meandering story line, in my opinion, and I had difficulty working my way through it. Though entertaining at times, informative at times, frustrating at times, I have to admit that it did pull me in and I read on because I just HAD to know what happened! A romance novel? Sort of. A work of classic literature? Definitely.
I drug my feet when this book was assigned, but I forged ahead driven strictly by the fact that I didn't want to be left out during discussion time. I sure am glad I did! This is an amazing, true story of a black woman who unknowingly contributed to the advancement of science and did for untold years even after her own demise. This book speaks not only to what methods, some unsavory, the world of medicine employed to get us where we are today but also to the generation of a race that suffered tremendous persecution. It seems surreal that these events could have happened from today's perspective, which made the book enlightening and informative. I would recommend it!
Have you ever read a book where you were so dreading the end? A book that brought you such joy and pleasure that you forced yourself to ignore the fact that, at some point, it would be over? This is the book! Amazing, endearing, shocking, heart-warming, inspiring...
