My Reviews
Our Book Club enjoyed this book. It sparked a lively discussion. There were some issues with timing that bothered some of us (at one point it seemed like Lily had been with the beekeepers for weeks.. come to find out it had just been a couple days). The ending seemed sort of tacked on (Let's wrap this up!) But overall we liked it. I put 4 stars by mistake and would really rate it 3 stars-maybe 3 1/2- but I can't figure out how to change my rating.
Our group had a great discussion which included the author by speakerphone! There is so much here to discuss, including eating disorders, relationships with parents, siblings, and men, family secrets, caring for the terminally ill. The book leaves you with questions, but that's what makes it interesting. Two in our group didn't like the book very much: one was uncomfortable with the food aspects of the book, having had an eating disorder herself. The other just couldn't get into it. The rest of us enjoyed it. I would highly recommend it for discussion.
Very well written and researched book about a travelling circus in the depression era. Sara Gruen can really tell a story! All the oddities of the circus come to life and feel very authentic and believable. I loved Gruen's style and plan to read more of her books.
I disliked this book and would not recommend it. The story was boring and just went on and on. The ending was abrupt and stupid and unbelievable.. 'let's wrap this up!' I cannot fathom why there are so many people who recommend this book when there are so many other great books out there to discuss.
This book is unique and inventive, quite unlike anything else I've ever read. Part love story/part sci-fi.. our book club had a lot to say about it. Would highly recommend this book for discussion.
