My Reviews
Of the books my club has selected so far, this was one of my favorites. An interesting tale, full of drama and intrigue. I found the historic references to be fascinating. I was rooting for Kuisl and Simon the whole way.
I thought there were parts of this book that were just overly redundant. After the first chapter, I agreed that there is a price that comes along with privilege. Took a while to get to the part about what we can do about this problem. Written to a fairly exclusive woman-centric audience. I did enjoy the book but it wasn't a fantastic book club book.
Absolutely wonderful novel. Such detail and care was put into the way that the stories unfolded and then intertwined. So many parallels between the two stories. Absolutely my favorite book club book read to date!!
An interesting tale that has a nice twist in it. Not overly addictive, but a very easy read. Somewhat cliche and expected in places but even so, that was OK.
I found myself to be mainly completely confused while reading this novel. I was really hoping that a character would come along that I really cared about, but that never happened. I don\'t understand how this got to be short-listed for the 2013 Women\'s Prize for Fiction.
Definitely a great book club discussion. Really informative story about Native American law and life on a reservation. Very cool that she wrote so thoroughly convincingly as a teenaged boy.
I had high expectations of Ian McEwan and he did not fair well. What an awful book. Opportunities were squandered to take the book in an interesting direction. Not worthy of a book club\'s time, in my opinion.
We enjoyed being able to get the perspective of various characters in the novel. That really helped fuel the discussion as every character was true to their representation. Beautifully written and delivered. A real thought-provoking plot.
A heart-wrenching tale, delicately told. Excellent fodor for a book club discussion.
I got the book from the library finally with only 6 days left to book club meeting. Good thing this book was highly addictive and I finished it in 4 days! 2 days to spare but I really wish I was still reading it. It was over too fast. Loved the interwoven stories and thought the premise was a subject that should be more widely known. I can't believe children were treated/ are still treated this way in adoptive and foster families.
This novel chronicles the life of a man in North Korea as the choices he makes/has made for him determine his fate. What a ride! I "read" this through books on tape on my 1hr long commute. It was slow-going at first, but once hooked, I was regularly sitting in the garage listening to just a little more. The recording also had an essay about how the author visited North Korea - very interesting. I learned a lot and am looking forward to learning more about this mysterious country.
An easy read that sucked me in.
The story was riveting. I wanted to know what was going to happen, but didn't want to read it too fast for fear of finishing it! There were so many twists and turns. Great book for a discussion.
