My Reviews
Set in rural West Virginia, the topic is family secrets and the plot reveals the family relationships and interactions from a child's perspective.
The story was interesting but lacked depth.
The story winds around unrealized expectations, guilt and purposeful withholding of information. It is another twist on the holocaust theme.
Club discussion was rich, full-bodied, dynamic, insightful, and fluid. The Night Circus brought forth rapid discussion points, observations, questions and laughter. We passed around Circus Peanut candy. We all gave this book a thumbs up!
2/7 members of the club experienced a family member's death by suicide and 1/7 lost a friend. This was the second book featured in our new club. The conversation was thoughtful, generating memories of teenage life experiences. A courageous choice for group discussion. A disquieting topic.
Grisham's drive to produce one novel a year knowing that folks will buy because of his fame appears to be the reason for writing this book. Perhaps if he had developed Mordicai's reasons/motivations/accomplishments for becoming a street lawyer or the mentorship relationship with more depth, I would have found the theme more convincing. It's an airport book -- a quick read for entertainment.
This book makes you thankful to be an American woman.
Our group found a lot of points to discuss with Perfect Peace. The key point is that this book is about a family's loyalty and support for each other.
