My Reviews
I actually give it higher than 3 stars, maybe 4 1/2 but it wouldn't let me change it.
I enjoyed the book, it definitely made me think and evaluate the culture that I was brought up in.
I loved about 2/3 of this book. It seemed like the last third was really unnecessary. We had a good discussion about it although we were trying to keep the ending a secret for one of our members that didn't quite finish it in time.
There are two main characters that "voice" this book. I assume that their lives intertwine at some point, I just couldn't get there. I liked one of the characters while really not enjoying the way the second character was written. Oh well... Most of our book club didn't make it through either.
This has been one of my most favorite books in a long time. I read it cover to cover, all the end notes, addendums etc. This is another look at WWII from a perspective often forgotten, the occupied. Sure, when WWII comes up, you think about the Holocaust, Pearl Harbor, the atomic bombs in Japan, D-Day, but this is about reacting to, coping and living with an occupying force. This book spurred a wonderful discussion.
I did like the story although it was dry in some parts. The book felt a little too on the upsale for donation money, like one extremely long pamphlet. On a whole his life's work is quite inspiring!
I became wrapped in the story very quickly and loved it all the way through.
