My Reviews
A very well researched and well written book -
Just when you think you have it figured out, it takes a dramatic turn. I didn't le the way the author choose to end the story though.
Great book for anyone who is interested in Cruising - or for those who enjoy a good armchair adventure!
includes recipies the author collects along the way -
The author has carefully crafted this book so the reader is left pondering the ending as well as doing some self assessment. This is a book that becomes SO much more interesting when discussing with a good book club group. There are so many angles to this book but they were not readily apparent to me upon my first reading. I am actually going to be back and re-read it after our club's discussion. In fact, our club has been re-discussing it for the past two meetings.
Well crafted and gripping version of Kennedy's Presidency and the events leading up to his assassination. I couldn't put it down!
The author weaves a tale that interlaces the lives of several characters - real and fictional - across time and location. It was entertaining and inspiring. I think it would be fun to discuss.
This would have been better as a Wikipedia entry. The author clearly did a lot of research, and wanted us to know that. The recipes were especially annoying.
I thought this was going to be a "self help" book about how to remember things. Instead, is a kind of adventure story with the author taking you on his journey around the globe exploring everything about memory. You learn about Memory Championships (who knew?) as well as various interesting people and authors all related to the brain and memory. He winds us competing is the US Memory Championship himself, and well, you'll have to read it to find out what happens! Our club really enjoyed discussing this book, and it was a rare one that everyone liked reading.
Although this is an older book, the topic is still very current. Highlights how political candidates often become corrupt and will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. A page-turner.
This was an interesting read - it held my interest, although the story is heartwrenching. The last half moves more quickly. The author did a good job of using language & vocab that is regional as well as period specific. The characters are well developed. The Lighthouse setting gave it a lot of romance & intrigue.
Well done story about the last days of the Hawaiian Royalty told from the viewpoint of a young Haole from San Francisco. I learned a lot and the story moved along very well.
I was anxious to read this book but honestly it was a real slog getting through it. The characters are so numerous and pop up randomly and seemingly out of context. The author is to be commended for her time spent in the garbage and her commitment to the research - she just failed at giving us a well told story
Although I've read articles here and there over the years, and even visited Shangra La in Hawaii, I'd never read a biography of Doris Duke. The authors did a great job of telling her story without being too solicitous, remaining fairly objective about her life.
This book had been on my shelf for a while, and I was so glad I read it. The author does a great job of weaving the main character into the true story of the Leper Colony.
Tyler Hamilton does a great job (with his co-author) of telling the behind the scenes story of Lance Armstrong and the world of doping in cycling. Written in first person, the story moves along well and is informative.
I enjoyed this book and admire the author for her courage and determination. I didn't realize until the close of the book tho that her hike occurred 20 yrs ago.
