My Reviews
The book was good. It was an interesting story and if you looked deep enough you are able to see connections with Hitler and the holocaust. Middle school studnets would very much enjoy this story, especially with an adult leading then toward this discovery. As for an adult book club, it just wasn't very "meaty." There were a few things to talk about it, but it didn't hold our attention for very long.
Louis grabs you by the heart strings and doesn't let go. This book is full of wonderfully inspiring stories of a man who can't be beat down. A page turner from the start, you won't want to set this book down!
Most of us liked the book for what it was. Something different and a little "taboo." We enjoyed discussing the characters and the over the top situations they find themselves in. It was agreed that the "adult content" got to be where it wasn't exciting anymore, because it happened all the time and was unrealistic.
This was an interesting book. It started out slow for most members, and most of us were just lukewarm about it. However, at the book club meeting we had a lot to talk about. This is the reason I do recommend it. I never really "got it." As a club we were about 50/50 on liking this book. The major concencis was that we were mostly just confused about what was happening and why. The characters acted very strangely and I think we had a hard time connecting to them. (The exception being Nick.)
Gone Girl is a highly addictive book that keeps you guessing.
A wonderful story about two women and the family who beat all the odds.
A wonderful book with amazing characters. From the strange recluse who lives next door to the precocious child who steals your heart, this is a book about making tough decisions and living what you believe, even when it's not the popular way.
A great insight to a complicated man and his amazing firsts wife.
A bit slow going at times, the author invites you into the heart of the main character. She is innocent and flawed, someone you want good things to happen to.
As a whole, most of our book club members did not finish reading the book. I think out of the 13 that attended the meeting only 3 or 4 finished the book. I am about a quarter of the way through and think it's fine, but I'm happy to put it down for a while to read a book that holds my attention a little more. I do like the two main characters, but there is a lot of detail that I don't have background on that tends to bog me down.
Week kept waiting for one of the kids to do good of make it, but it never happened.
Flawed, yes, but they end up being dear to your heart at the end.
It was about a 50-50 split on who liked this book and who didn't, but the likes had just a few more. We liked the history part and the build up, however the ending felt unfinished like the author was hurrying things up. We didn't like the choice of "bad guy." It seemed unconnected to the story itself. We realized that 80% of our discussion was about the first 3/4 of the book because that's the part we liked the best.
