The Watch

This is a challenging book to read and some people felt that reading it a second time would be worth while. Each chapter is written from a different character's perspective of the same event. The story takes place in Afghanistan and we see what happens to "good people" who need to follow the military command, as well as what follows from an "accidental" bombing of innocent people. It is not an easy read, since it takes a while to figure out what is going on in each new chapter, but for those who like a challenging book, with lots to discuss, this is a great choice

Things Fall Apart

It takes a while to get into the book, so keep reading. A very well written book about the effect of change on tribes in Nigeria when the English missionaries arrive. Our discussion could have gone on for hours longer if people didn't have to get up for work in the morning!

Julio's Day

This was the first graphic novel we have read and everyone was happy to have a new experience. There were issues of feeling there were some wholes in the story, but to cover 100 years in 100 pages, is certainly a challenge for the author. Overall the group felt the story was an important one and well written/drawn.

The Kitchen House

The Kitchen House gave a vivid description of how two different men, raised very differently treated slaves. The females each had their own way of dealing with personal crisis and each learned from each other, even though their situations were very different. Very well written, although at times, we would have liked more information about certain characters, that the author said in an interview, she purposely did not give us.

Life in a Jar: The Irene Sendler Project

This is one of the most inspiring books I've ever read. It should be a community read book. Although it reads like fiction this non-fiction book keeps you riveted from beginning to end and beyond. I thought I had holocaust books from almost every angle possible, but I was wrong. I will read this one again.
