My Reviews
This is the debut novel for author Lola Jaye. We follow the main character Lois Bate from age 12 through 30 as she is guided by a "manual" of advice and life lessons her deceased father has left her. Initially I almost stopped reading during the teen years but kept reading and for me the story got better. The story takes place in the UK and the older the character gets the more interesting the story became, and there is a lot of humor in her father's advice. There is an underlying sad tone as nothing in the real world can fill the void in Lois's life but I enjoyed how the author wrapped up this story.
Great Book Club Book ! The Book discussion questions lead to great discussions. This is a scintillating page turner!
Great book to discuss. Love historical fiction and I learned a lot from this book. There were many inspiring characters you find yourself cheering on.
This is just a super fluffy read that is not appropriate for book group discussions. The best part was the recipes at the end.
This author tells the story of a slave catcher in the south who begins to discover new ways of thinking as his life progresses. This book is very informative and is told in the voice of Coswell Timms. Coswell is an extremely likeable character who finds love in the most unexpected place.
This was a great historical fiction novel. The characters are engaging and it gave you some insight into the education of boys in military supported schools during WWII. It was also interesting to see the ways people resisted occupation in France. Great book to discuss.
Hard to pick three words to describe this book. Initially reading had a hard time liking Ove and his gruff character. But like an onion as the layers are peeled back and more is revealed you are drawn in.
Not only do we have a great story unfold, we get to walk in a young man's shoes and experience what life is like on the autism spectrum. Our group is going to NYC to see this play as a follow up event..
I enjoyed hearing the story told from memories of the character as a 13 year old boy. Although there was 4 deaths and mysteries to solve there is also a lot of humor in this story.
This is a book group must read. This historical fiction is a wonderful novel with compelling and inspirational characters. You are drawn into the story so much that you feel like you are there watching it unfold. Amazing writing right down to the final pages. Can't wait to read more from Kristin Hannah!
OK, This is a great book club discussion book. I say this because there are many opinions about how the main character lived his life. We discussed what love meant and how people deal with grief. If you start reading this book and don't like it because you think it's too over the top, hang in there...... the fun starts when the adventure begins!
This book was a nice read. We had a relaxing book club event where everyone contributed pet stories. It was fun and the book had enough interesting situations to answer some good questions during our discussion.
