My Reviews
The more we discussed the book the more twists and turns we discovered. Great book for first meeting of the season. Light but engaging.
This book was a hit with all our members. It was very informative about rowing and being part of a crew team.
It was very interesting to hear about how Berlin prepared for the Olympics while actually readying for WWII.
The group had mixed reviews about the Goldfinch. Most enjoyed segments but wish it was shorter. Insight into art theft, antique reproductions, furniture refinishing, drugs, class differences, character flaws etc. Most people enjoyed the very descriptive, emotional writing style.
We read this book based on reviews on Amazon and one of our members. It had the potential to be interesting but the story never really went anywhere after the pandemic. 20 years and not much progress. The traveling symphony was rather weird performing Shakespeare in devastated areas. The named characters were not well developed and the characters in the symphony were named tuba, clarinet, etc. very weird.
The book was difficult to get into and some parts dragged. It did, however, hold your interest after a major event occured about 1/2 way through the book. Lots of interesting discussions took place during book group and the reviews were mixed but mostly positive.
Very confusing flow of time and characters. Very spiritual/?Cristian influence.
New view of Afican Americans vs Africans
The book group unanimously enjoyed "Circling the Sun". Nice discussion although the group was small (5 people attended). Interesting historical fiction set in Kenya. The main character, Beryl Markham, was the first woman breaking barriers in horse training and aviation in the 1920's. It was also interesting that her "friend" in the novel, Karen Blixen, was the author of "Out of Africa" but used a pen name.
Just as this book is described. Grumpy old Ove does have a heart. As one member described, this book was like an onion with many layers. The more you read the more the characters history was revealed. We enjoyed the in-depth portrayal of the characters. Simply beautiful
This book didn't encourage much discussion in our group. It was a true story that many found it reinforced their spirituality and there were some that thought it was a little to sugar coated.
Everyone enjoyed "The Aviator's Wife" and the general consensus was that Charles was a brilliant but despicable guy and that Anne Morrow, brilliant in her own right, was caught in the era of women's rights in the 20's and allowed herself to be controlled. So of that was believed to be her introverted personality.
