My Reviews
I enjoyed the book. The story begins in the sixties and continues into present day. It was interesting to see the changes in attitudes towards disabled children and the role of women. Lot of interesting conversation can occur on the themes in this book.
I loved this book. So interesting. You won't believe the role of women in the political arena at this time.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were beautifuly described and the setting was amazing.
This book was highly rated and received critical acclaim. I found the story to be unique, however it was not necessarliy engaging to me. The story is character driven, but the plot was weak epectially the ending. Not one of my groups favorites.
I cannot put into words how much I hate this book. I was determined to get through it, and tried to attribute the writing to cultural or translation differences. The author discussed the missing wife minimally even though that was what the blurb on the back stated as the main point of the story. The main character was pathetic and had very odd relationships with both his wife and cousin. The majority of the text was Turkish history, storytelling, and mysticism that did not make sense to the average readaer or most likely to anyone not currently obtaining an Ivy League education.
I found this book to be shocking because of the way white Africans viewed and spoke of black natives. The story was a bit depressing due to the squalid living conditions of the main characters and their slow descent into maddness. I thought there would be more of a romance due to descriptions I have read, but I did not see one at all. It does however, have much you can discuss.
Although this is supposed to be a love story I felt it was more a tale of betrayal. The prose was beautiful and very rich in detail. The story was engaging and I enjoyed it. However, the more I thought about the book after I finished it, the angrier I became at the main charcter and the ending of the novel. Many interesting discussions are possible from this story.
This book was so interesting and engrossing. Mary lived a life of privilage until marrying Abe Lincoln. She faced troubles that would have been easily dealt with today.
I loved this book. I thought it was funny and also a nice quick read. However, there is not that much to discuss, so you might just want to read it on your own.
Slow to get into, but becomes more engrossing. Not really historical fiction, but probably fairly close. Can provide good conversation, but not an overall group favorite.
For deep literary minds only. Overall slow and dull. Appears to hold interest for those willing to look into the deeper meaning of the text.
A good story about relationships. Not much about the kids, more about the older adults. Good book, not so much to talk about.
I enjyoed the book. The language was beautiful, and the characters were engaging. However, it is a deep read that either requires another read or an interpertation. Also, not so familiar with the history and feel that something may have been lost in translation.
A very entertaining read filled with crime and drama. Long, but engrossing.
Very funny, great for a good laugh and a fun discussion. A good pick after a serious read.
Beautifuly written and engrossing to read. Don't read about Frank's life before reading because it will ruin the suprising, true ending.
A light enjoyable read.
Very different and interesting. A little slow at the beginning, but worth it.
Good read, a lot to discuss.
A really enjoyable book, lots to discuss, liked by all members.
Very enjoyable, easy read, tough subject area.
A lot to talk about. A family with some secrets and lots of drama.
A very interesting book about the teens who make up the winning chess team at Murrow. More about the people than the game. Especialy interesting to a New Yorker familiar with the school.
Touching but sad story of women in Kabul.
My book club loved it, but I didn't. It was a beautifully written story with some great lines. I didn't however feel for any of the characters and was not too interested with the story line.
I loved this book, it was so interesting. A real page turner.
A beautifully written story about a refugee and a British family. Some parts were tough to read, but overall satisfying.
