My Reviews
4 stars because not all of my 9 members totally loved it.
Lack of love came from inability to identify with the author, which lead to disinterest in the progress of the author's project.
Regardless, we had a wonderful, spritied discussion that lasted past our normal end time.
Topics we covered:
* Identifying ennui in oneself
* Differences between being critical and judgemental
* Depending on others for one's own happiness is "bad", yet how do we explain how much INFLUENCE others have over our happiness?
* Self-Discipline as central to her various resolutions (cross-reference with the book, _Willpower_.)
And more; we had a great time with this book.
My group did not find this book compelling at all, but we all enjoyed it. It's absurdity well done, and lead to talk about other absurd comedy, including a review of the Monty Pythos Parrot Sketch!
I recommend it to individuals, just not a great club selection.
This play is iconic of an age, and well worth any group's time to explore.
Wasserstein's insights into this age group are clear, and because of the short format, the readers don't have to wade through a lot of 'story' to get to the intellectual / cultural truth that is such fun to discuss.
