My Reviews
How can Paris in the '20's be so boring? How can a wife of Hemingway be so boring? I felt I had a better understanding of Hadley after reading the Wikipedia article.
By choosing to write a fictional account of a real event, the author possibly feel obligated to make the characters or their actions very convincing. She also seemed to lose interest part way through. She was only able to rescue the heroine through the introduction of a new, rather important character 3/4's of the way through the book.
The writer seemed to have little self awareness, and not much cat awareness. She came across as pretty spoiled and self centered. I felt sorry for the other cats.
Although I don't particularly like "war books," this one was so well written, had such a compelling personality for its subject, and was so insightful as to what shaped his character as well as the disturbing characters of his tormentors, I couldn't put it down. Fascinating to read about the spirit of these soldiers from World War II.
Sometimes challenging, but worth it.
Very twisty turny and surprising!
We are still reading it. We have been for over a year. We will continue.
A view of Ireland during the Civil War and the War of Independence--and beyond. Beautifully written in two voices: Roseanne's and the doctor's. Painful to read often, but ultimately inspiring.
Crossings are fascinating and moving. Descriptions of the Irish Famine make it more than an interesting historical event.
