2nd in Malcolm Fox series about The Complaints division in Edinburgh police system. Fox and his Complaints crew are sent to Fife, Kicaldy, and this is a very interesting story about who did what decades ago and who did what now. Scotland's police system, and this setting, is different from ours which is interesting, and Fox is an interesting character both personally and professionally. Rankin is considered a masterful writer in the mystery world, and I agree!
Ivan Doig takes us, through his spare but truly beautiful and informative words, to Montana's historical times when The Big Ditch was being dug. Mostly it is a story of three motherless boys, and their one room schoolhouse which becomes a learning experience that lasts a lifetime for many reasons and a wonderful teacher. Also, Halley's Comet, whether to stay or move on, whether to close the one room schools later, what a wonderful story! And it will stay with you long after reading!
Daniel Woodrell writes about this area of the Ozarks in such truthful, insightful language, that makes a reader feel he really knows the place and the people--and he does. Yes, it's dark, at times very sad, at times even shocking--but Ree keeps on trying, to save her home, her family, to teach life to her younger siblings and take care of what needs done, even though it means giving up her own hopes at times. What a story! And what a character Ree Dolly is-you won't forget her.
A classic, with so much to say about right and wrong, monarchy vs democracy, rich vs poor and slavery. Mark Twain really tells a long, interesting story, very well. It is deep, and intelligent, and maybe preferable for book groups that like to read classice.
