My Reviews
Hard to get into but then a fluff easy read. Too many red herrings that didn't have a purpose when the book was completed. Characters and relationships not believeable.
This isn't a fast paced book but has the reader acquainted with the characters and setting before taking off at the end and keeping the reader setting on the edge of their seats, tense at last of the book. The first in a series of 6 boxes that ends each book in such a way, you can't wait to start the next book to find out what happens next.
The best thing about this book is wanted to know more about this area and the history. Characters weren't believe able and too many murders to began to care.
Great discription of New England and their outlook. Lucy is a little unbelievable but charming.
Felt like I was in Paris but have never been.
A good mystery but the subject matter was hard to read for me. Some holes in the story but kept me turning pages to find out who the murderer was. Under ground scenes were hard to follow but the main idea of mud, slime and dark was brought across.
The characters weren't convincing but the information about the operation and behind the scenes of a zoo was amazing.
Slogged through the book waiting for it to get better or makes sense. There were a few gems of good writing but didn't make the book as there were too many things wrong and I didn't care about the characters, plot or how it would painfully end.
I think the reason I liked this book was it was such a different idea. Toward the end of the book I felt it lost some believeablity but I did like the ending.
I didn\'t like all the characters but did find them believable. I was hooked on page one and read it through in one sitting. I have read it three times over several years and find it fresh each time.
Language was cumbersome but very rich. I was surprised by the ending.
Seemed too wordy and hard to keep track of all the characters but after finishing it, I found the story and a few characters stayed with me. I would read another by this author.
Was slow paced until the end, then took off and wrapped up all the loose ends. Got lost with all the building descriptions. Couldn't have figured out the murderer as there wasn't enough information until the end. With all that said, it was addictive and ready to read the second book.
I read this on my Kindle but found out at book club that in the book there was a map and a glossary of the slang terms. Being able to have referenced that while reading it would have made it more understandable. I learned about New York City\'s history that was very fascinating.
Slow start but once I got who was talking to who, it was a fast and page turner read.
It was hard to put down.
Unbelievable plot and confusing with too many characters.
Descriptions about the location and food was great.
I put the book away several times after starting it. I just didn’t like the jargon. Since it was for book club, I made myself finish it and it did get better. Then after reading about the author I feel like I might read his next book. He is far more interesting than he comes across in his book. The best thing I read about him was he describes himself as happy.
