It was very informative on how indenture servants and slaves were forced to live. One must not compare it to the Help. It has it own stories to tell.
A very well researched and well written story of the horrors of war. Amazing how he survive!
The Dynamic of the complex family got a little confusing and sometime a little boring. Not my favorite book, but okay read. I have a hard time when people go on and on without dealing with their problems and this was happening in many ways. Keeping secrets can ruin lives or definitely take the fun out of living.
So Communicate. lol
I loved this book. I love how the story webbed together peoples' lives, hopes and dreams as they strive to survive in the wilderness of Alaska. I lived 20 years in Alaska and it is not an easy place to live, especially in the long dark winters living in the "Bush". I definitely recommend this book!!
Wow this was a wonderful read. Could not put down the book. Author really pulls you into the story to where you believe you are one of the characters. My heart broke for Travis as he struggled to raise his daughter against all odds. Amazing story! Must Read!

Amazing life changing story. Gripped my interest from the very beginning and kept it the whole way through. Loved it so much because I'm an outdoor girl that loves challenges, however that would be one I won't try.
Very well written British Novel. Love the little village feel and the small town mentality. The reality check from the younger generation's behavior brought you back to current time. The book had a feel of being written in the 40's. Highly recommend it.

Very moving book between fairy tale and real life, death and living, old and new, non living vs living, wild vs tame, safe vs loving. Author did incredible job with yin and yang of living in \\\"bush\\\" Alaska and the mystical twist seems so appropriate, for Alaska is a very Magical place to live!
Classic! Puts you right in middle of 1900 Brooklyn New York. You really feel the poverty and destitute of "lower class", but you also feel the human power to overcome and the hope for better life!
This book won Pulitzer so I was excited about reading it. I kept hoping it would all come together. I felt it never did. I think it's for very intellectual people that have the time to ponder very detailed chapters. I wasn't in that place in my life.
Eugenics in 1960's in North Carolina, Who knew? This book was so well written I felt like I was on the tobacco farm in the 60's. Diane does an awesome job shining light on not a very proud subject of the past in NC. She really create the scene and makes you feel how they must of felt. It's so apparent Diane Chamberlain does a lot of preparation and research into her books. A must read!!
If you like history and fossils this is book for you. Was fascinating in way this was based on real events. Author did very well on describing that time in history. Just a little slow for me but that is personal opinion
I enjoyed the first couple hundred pages but then the continuing self destructive behaviors really started to bother me. I really believe it wasn't the right time for me to read this book due to personal challenges I'm facing and the disatrous theme of character lives really stressed me out. It was very well written just very over whelming for me at this time. I did complete all 700+ pages!!
this is an amazing book of struggles 2 girls, on a young slave owner and the other the slave. Their hopes and dreams collide together, get crushed and survive. It is amazing well told true story. A Must read.
Lisa See once again does an amazing job capturing a time in our history where so much change and turmoil was happening and the effects on three women's lives.
I'm amazed I never read this timeless book before. It's a classic and shock it's not on more must read book list. It's amazing story of the strength of women surviving against all odds. And love found in the most dismal situations. Wonderful Historical fiction.
Everyone needs to read this book to get better understanding of people who are different than yourself. The characters are so well written that I could Physical picture each one. How lovely how everyone learns empathy and accepting differences and bonds are formed that become unbreakable. This book has a lot to teach us. Love love love it. Read it many times!!
