My Reviews
It is not everyday that you read such a brilliantly written Historical Novel such as this one. Steinbeck is a literary genius, uncomparable to anything we have read so far. His message resonates today as we face many of the same problems of survival and discrimination. It took me awhile to get into the vernacular but it soon became part of me and I am glad I persevered! It was well worth it!
This book, like other Christopher Moore books goes beyond your normal novel. He has a unique way of telling a tale mixing the real world with other possibilities. This one I loved particularly for the art history of the Impressionist painters and their works. He brought these men to life, reminding us how they struggled to make a living following their passion and how they lived for their art.
This novel was very confusiing and hard to follow. The general gist concerned the unrest and buildup to the 1980's revolution in Bucharist. It dealt with corruption, counter corruption and more. It was difficult to keep track of who was on whose side at any given time. Perhaps it was translated from another language and that translation left it even more difficult to follow.
A good, quick read. Easily held your attention.
Great story of human nature overcoming personal disadvantages. Interesting history about the Nazis and the 1936 Olympics. Made that period leading up to war again come alive.
Very heartwarming and realistic.
