The great thing about this book was that it sparked some really great conversation at our book club meeting. With this book, as opposed to other club reads, we all had varying points of view about the author, about his quest, and about his conclusions. These different viewpoints made for a very an engaging and insightful conversation.
I didn't expect to like a book about hockey - especially not one set in the first half of the 20th century - but this one really grew on me! It's not really about hockey, though hockey is an essential component of this tale. It's really about the humorous and sometimes tragic life of Percival "King" Leary. The language is whimsical and completely unique, and brings the time-period (and place) to life. The book is rife with Canadiana, which is fun and different. If you want a good laugh, but also a surprisingly poignant tale, you'll enjoy this pick!
Gone Girl is a suspenseful page-turner and a great read, but at the meeting we found there was not much to discuss. We ran out of discussion points shortly after we'd finished discussing whether we liked it and how crazy the main characters were... It's very difficult to get too deep about a book that isn't very deep to begin with.
I enjoyed the way the \\\"The Paris Wife\\\" engrossed me in the romance between Ernest Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley Richardson. Though it seemed clear that their marriage was doomed from the beginning (and not just because I knew she was his \\\"first\\\" wife), I really rooted for them and was emotionally invested in their union, making their eventual crumble that much more of a heartbreak.
