My Reviews
This is a beautiful, gentle story that sets love, acceptance, and friendship against cultural and racial conflict.
This book is written with a wonderful voice!
poorly sketched characters; predictable plot
This is a great discussion book. Most of us were unfamiliar with France's role in the Holocaust, so we all felt we'd learned something. Aside from the main character's unexplained obsession with Sarah and a few other things that make the story somewhat unrealistic, we enjoyed the book. Our one hour meeting ran to 1 3/4 hours with all the discussion the book produced.
This was a great discussion book! Lots of interesting issues.
The book is an easy read but doesn't offer much in the way of discussion. The book's characters are a sad bunch whose lives revolve around insecurity and alcohol. It is interesting to meet Hemingway's first wife and learn a bit about his early career. But the overall gloomy nature of the story and its lack of discussion options made it a less than good book for our club.
Our book club unanimously agreed that the book was too predictable/pat. The characterizations of the older, middle, and younger sister provided nothing new and the Pollyanna ending left much to be desired. Several of our members disliked the narrative voice, finding it distracting and confusing. It t would make a great beach read as long as you don't mind predictability..
