My Reviews
Based in Afghanistan , the book followed the lives of two woman and the oppression that they were under. Makes me glad I was born in the USA and still live here.
Who would want to read a book about Haiti? You should! Author Ted Oswald brings the life lived in Haiti to the forefront through the eyes of a young girl named Liberte. We live her struggles and see her insight with those she meets. The reader will never look at their life quite the same after reading Because We Are. The message is clear. And, each purchase of this book goes directly to help Haitian efforts.
When a book is fictional but based on truths it is always going to be a thought provoking book....like how could this happen for real? The book is well written in the fact that you do not know who is black or white halfway through the book. The beginning does not make sense until you near the end of the book making this a very good book to read. It is intriguing.
This book will touch the hearts of anyone who has lost a parent at a young age, given up a child, or ever loved one they lost. Everyone will find this book moving and inspiring. Life has twists and turns and we cross paths for a reason. This is one book that needs to be in your list to read!
Book is very graphic and TV probable is too. Many folks love the epic story. Only a few in our club read the book all the way. Most started it and closed it. Too gory and dark for our club.
It is hard to imagine how these miners survived so far down in a hole inside of a mountain. With this read one gets the insight of how they survived with the journal one of the men kept. The emotions that arise, the guilt that comes forth, the comrodary formed, then split apart when they know they may make it to freedom again, is all brought out in the book. Nothing much is left out, even where the "latrine" was set up to be used. This is one book the guys in a book club, would have a guy's perspective to give. I for one would love to hear their point of view about this book.
The author, Holly, never spells out the hot sexy sciences and I like that about her writings. Her books are fun and tied into her local town. This book was one that I didn't want to put down. You are never sure that the main character will ever find her true love even if he is right in front of her. I like the that in a book because sometimes you just know they are going to end up together and the book becomes boring. I loved the main character Pip and her down to earth ideas. This one is not boring!
This is a well written book. I didn't give it a five because I thought the book could still tell the story with less words. It is a long book. The story line is fantastic in how it all intertwines. I don't like all the things the main character gets into, but that is the mother in me. We picked this book for our book club to read. Those who listened to the audio option gave the book a five. They did this while sewing or Zentangling. Those who read the whole book gave it less than a 5 because parts just lagged. Over all though it is a book worth reading as the ending is sweet, humorous and fitting.
