My Reviews
This book had a wonderful, engaging start but disappointed at the half. The plot lost focus and rambled on.
At first I was unsure where the story was leading and how I felt about Harold. Halfway through the book I could not put the book down. I was so drawn into the characters self discoveries and their new relationships that helped change them.
This book takes you through lots of doctor appointments and challenges of cancer. At first I enjoyed hearing the various book titles the mother and son read for their book club but halfway through the book I lost interest. There is little conversation about the books. Mostly the book is a memoir of the mother and her battle with cancer.
No depth to the characters. I\\\'m embarrasses to say I read it to the end.
I gravitate towards historical fiction books during the time period of WWII. The book The Hotel Around The a Corner Of a Bitter and Sweet was one of my favorites and inspired me to learn more about the Japanese Internment camps. I thought The Japanese Lover would enlighten me again but it was very disappointing and for lack of a better term, fluffy.
I read as many historical fiction books centered around WWII and this one is unforgettable. It is a book that drew me in alongside the characters forgetting where I was. Learning about the atrocities of the all women's concentration camp at Ravensbruck is shocking. I learned so much more of the hardships and injustices of this time period from this book and admire how Caroline Ferriday reached out to some of the victims in an extraordinary way!
