My Reviews
Had a serviceable knowledge of the subject before reading it. It was like reading a long newspaper article. I like reads to be escape reality.
I wish we had an option for a sideways thumb. It's not really thumbs down so much as "meh." The author had some habits that I found annoying (For example, going backward within a backward glance at the protagonist's life (written in first person). He'd be examining something that had happened yesterday which would remind him of something 40 years ago, which would remind him of someone he hadn't seen in a long time which would remind him of... When he'd finally get back to his point, I didn't care anymore.
It was just OK. I could think of several tweaks that could have improved the tale for me. My book club members (who mostly loved the book) were suggesting it might be because it was hard for me to slow down in a story from a different culture (busy American), but I have spent time savoring slow, different-culture-than-my-own books with, what I believe to be a better narrative style. This just wasn't my cup of tea. Had it been longer, I probably wouldn't have taken the time to finish it. Easily read, easily forgotten.
