I loved this book!Bliss: A Novel by O.Z. Livaneli
Book Club Recommended
Dark, Boring, Slow
BlissEveryone who read it in our group enjoyed this book, even those who thought it was going to be too disturbing. It's a close study of the transformation of three characters as they interact with each other. It is a well-written exploration of the power and variety of cultural norms even within the same society.
Ar'n't I a Woman?: Female Slaves in the Plantation South by Deborah Gray White
Book Club Recommended
Interesting, Informative, Persuasive
Ar'n't I a womanI have a much fuller understanding of plantation life for slave women and I am inspired to learn more. The book is well-documented, clearly written and about 167 pages, not including footnotes. It introduced me to many issues in the lives of slave women that I had never thought about before.
