My Reviews
Some members felt the book had too many "in your face" sexual comments and were offended, while others felt that it was a little "over the top", but the sexual comments were a very minor piece of the book. After all, one of the main themes is "Lighten Up". It made for a lively discussion, as approximately half the members really liked it and the other half really didn't like it. It's a meaty book, with a lot of substance. It's also a difficult book to start, but once you get into Tom Robbin's rhythm, it's fun. Would recommend it.
This is an amazing novel based on the life of a real person in the late 1800's in Mexico. The author dedicated nearly 20 years of his life researching the book--wonderful read.
The members were surprised that there were so many topics to discuss. The meeting lasted over 2 hours and many, many interesting discussions were held.
The author, John Paxson, did a telephone interview with us. The book is about the manipulation of the public through broadcast news. John's background and vast experience made for an interesting discussion regarding news reports from around the world. It was one of our best meetings.
The book is gripping. It starts out with a near death experience and builds from there. It explores the three major religions and their inter-connectivity. It is sometimes heavy, but never boring and makes for a lively book discussion. Highly recommended.
