The book gives an amazing insight into the invasion of France. You feel as if you are actually there!
Some members of our club felt it was slow in the beginging and couldn't get into it.
I felt it was interesting and insightful. I really got the most out of the 2 appendices in the end. The first give an amazing insight into the authors thought process for writing the story. Even though she wasn't able to complete it, you can see where the story was moving towards... making it all the more meaningful.
The 2nd appendix details the authors story. I felt this was heartwrenching but critical to the book. It lets you see not only how the war effecting the characters in her story, but in the author's real life as well.
The story of Mortenson is a valuable one. Our book club was all glad that they had read it, but felt the author's style made it a difficult read. The author didn't prioritize the facts and presented them factually, instead of making the "story" itself readable. I've read other biographies which draw you in and keep you interested... the group felt they could only read 1-2 chapters at a time and then needed to take a break
I have read several books on this general topic, Winds of War, War and Remembrance and Exodus. This was the first one that took place in Italy and was not told from an American perspective. It is amazing to learn about the support of the Italian citizens in such a terrible time.
Although the book is not too long. Some of our members found it slower reading because it was "dense" and there were a lot of names to learn in the begining.
Most members enjoyed the story. I thought the flashbacks were not as interesting as the rest of the book. Not as strong a story as Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.
Whether you love the book or not, the issues it raises generates a great discussion. Definitely worth reading.
This was an interesting read. Unfortunately I found it a bit dry. The background information into the depression, the lives of jockeys and horseracing made it worthwhile. Amazing how important one horse could be to the world!
A fun story that all members of the club enjoyed. The information about the places they stopped was interesting and several members would like to go to some of them.!
Her "Princess" approach had me laughing out loud! Several others felt she could be a little annoying after a while, but I loved the whole book.
I enjoyed this book and found it interesting, however that was not
the concensus of the club. Some found it slow and the sex scenes long,.,, there was a lot of sex scenes....
After reading the Glass Castle, my book club decided to learn more about the family in this book.
It was a fun, quick read about an interesting family, during an important time in history.
I enjoyed the book. The history was interesting and I liked how the story was told by several characters. Everyone felt the information about ww2 was interesting and new. In addition the details about sharecroppers and life on the farm at that time was informative.
Everyone in the group felt it was a worthwhile read. I've already recommended it. Our discussion was great and there was a lot of debate about certain parts of the story. Made for a great meeting
Although I was very interested in the subject of this book, I found the writing style slow and difficult to read. The portrayals of the key characters would have been good, if I could get past the writing style
Although this book was slow reading, a lot of names and information, it was definitely worth the effort! I am not a techie, so it was really interesting to learn about the history if all the technical devices I use everyday.
We read Atlas Shrugged as a club and chose to read this as a follow-up. Very detailed and interesting concept but dialogue got preachy and long. Atlas Shrugged was the better written
Everyone enjoyed the book but the consensus was that Molakai was even better
We had controversy over the ending which made an interesting discussion
This book was a good read and generated a good discussion at our meeting. Several people were struck by how the author phrased things and we spent a significant amount of time with quotes of significance to each of us
I enjoyed it but the rest of the group thought it was slow
Beautifully written and descriptive. Slow pace which made it hard to get through
This was a highly entertaining book that our entire book club enjoyed! The way the author portrayed the main character was very insightful and gave an interesting perspective. There was a lot of humor interspersed as well
I enjoyed the book overall but preferred the hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet with the same topic. My book group liked this one as well
I couldn't get into the book and was making myself read it for our meeting
I really enjoyed this book and so did the rest of my book club. The characters were quirky and interesting and once I started, I couldn't put the book down!
I wish there was more about Lincoln. The majority of the book focuses on the people “living” in the cemetery instead.
