My Reviews
This is a simple read, as long as one can stomach torture scenes. However, because it is written in contemporary language, it doesn't create any atmosphere whatsoever; it's more like watching a cheaply made, black-and-white movie from the 30's. Additionally, this book has the longest denouement on record; I found myself wondering if it would ever end. There are so many well-written books out there that I found this one a waste of time.
This book reads like several long poems about three generations of women impacted by the changed social and political situation in Cuba: those who stay vs. those who leave, the decent into madness, and hope for future reconciliation.
I just didn't care enough--about the story, about the people, about the setting--to finish the book. It read like a movie on the Lifetime channel.
Claustrophobic and unbelievable. The heroine becomes too powerful and virtuous after experiencing so much trauma. She relies too heavily on the hired help who are too virtuous.
