...you may also like this book about how four brave, strong women survive in ancient Judea. Based on historic events.
Fictionalized account of Baroque painter Artemesia Gentileschi, her difficult but interesting life and career.
Strong, well-developed characters made this a big hit with our book club. Humor softened this dramatic tale about family, relationships, betrayals, secrets, and ultimately, love. Includes some strong language and sexual situations.
This mystery is well-paced with interesting characters. We chose it for October to set the mood for Halloween. It was a hit with our club. One member read it in 2 days! It does include a lot of Irish terms and names. The paperback version did not include the glossary but one is available on the author's webite. This didn't seem to bother readers, though.
Serious topic but interesting to read of first-hand account of survival and forgiveness.
This story was about dreams and illusions, reality and delusions. Ultimately, it was about doing the right thing. However, I was disappointed. There was only 1½ likeable characters and no less than 7 different plot lines.
This book is a look into the lives of several resilient slum-dwelling families. Many topics for discussion are touched on: poverty, corruption, government, health, justice system, gender roles, economics, religious beliefs, value systems, powerlessness, etc. Difficult, disturbing subject matter to read but worthwhile.
This was very hard to get into at the beginning because of too many characters\\\' back stories. The pace picked up but there were still too many stories going on at once. This would be good for discussion for book clubs that like character-driven novels with some drama added for effect.
Unusual setting in time and place. Members generally gave positive reviews. Some said it was slow/hard to get into at first but last 2/3 went pretty fast. Interesting, complex characters but left some unanswered questions. Very dramatic ending.
Some members of our book club said they laughed out loud. Novel is written from man's point of view. Fast, easy read. Good discussion of characters and situations. Movie version on DVD.
This was our club's Halloween selection. Most members gave it a thumbs up. For me, it was funny in spots and a little bit spooky. Our discussion revolved around ghosts/haunted houses, restoration of old homes & furniture, and the relationship between Melanie, the main female character, and not one, but two, male admirers.
All 5 members at our meeting gave this book a thumbs up. The novel's uplifting messages were believe in yourself, believe in your dreams, and believe in love & romance. It showed how books & reading can unite a community.
