My Reviews
Once again Jodi Picoult does an excellent job of drawing you into the lives of her characters. This was an excellent book on the very important topic of bullying. It definitely makes you reflect on what happens daily to some of the children in our school systems.
Anna Karenina is a classic that grabs your attention and holds it until the end. Anna's greatest strengths are ultimately her greatest weaknesses. A must read for everyone, especially those that love to read the classics of old.
This book is a must read for everyone. It really makes you reflect on the peaceful life we have been blessed with here in the USA. The hardships and tragedies that this young boy endured are incredible. A real eye-opener to what is happening in other parts of the world.
I started to read this book with some trepidation, but once I started it, I couldn't put it down. It is filled with all of life's trials, joys, passions, and sadnesses.
This book was just as good - if not better - than Kite Runner. Hosseini is an extremely talented writer. He has the ability to draw you into the characters and make you feel their joy, their pain, their fears and their triumphs. This was the best book I have read this year.
John Irving does an incredible job of weaving a multitude of characters throughout this book and yet he is still able to tie out all of the storylines at the end.
He pulls you into the story so deeply, that when it ends you are sad to let these characters (who have become your friends) go. One of Irvings best.
This was a good book, but I was a little disappointed in it. It kept my attention, but did not have the pull on me that one of Jodi Picoult's books do. The story focuses on the strained relationship between a mother and daughter. You are never able to bond with this mother because Moriarty paints her as such a harsh and unmoving character. I would recommend this to people, but it's definitely not one of the best books I have read this year.
Astrid and Veronika are two women that forge an unlikely bond of friendship that transcends generations. As they each try to hide from their painful past, they find in each other a confidante. As their friendship grows, they are able to unburden themselves of the secrets and pain of their past relationships. Once unburdened they are able to discard the chains of unhappiness and begin to live again.
A story of two young mothers (one in the 1800's and the other in the 1960's)intricately woven into a story of perseverance and hope through some of life's greatest trials and tragedies.
Told through the eyes of Adie, a young girl who becomes pregnant and is sent away by her family. She encounters a friend who entrusts her with a journal of a young mother (Tempe)back in the 1800's. As Adie goes through tremendous heartbreak and trials her life parallels that of Tempe. Through it all, each of them perseveres and hopes for a brighter tomorrow.
Louise Murphy does a wonderful job of depicting a journey of survival for two children during the nazi occupation of Poland.
With good and evil on either end of the spectrum, you are riveted as the author pulls you from one side to the other. Although, the atrocities that occurred during this timeframe in history are hard to fathom, the perseverance of the human spirt is much to be admired.
This is a nice story about two young sisters (Sally and Troo) who survive a summer in 1959 with their mother hospitalized with hepatitis and their drunken stepfather out of control. A murderer and molester is on the prowl in their neighborhood.
This book is an easy read and will keep your attention throughout the story.
This book was a nice easy read - but too predictable.
I enjoyed 'The Space Between Us" so much that I went and purchased "If Today Be Sweet". I was not disappointed. I actually enjoyed this book even better. A wonderful book that celebrates cultural differences.
Maggie O'Farrell does a great job of switching the point of view between the 3 main characters. Kitty, the grandmother has Alzheimers. Esme, the great-aunt is being released from a mental hospital where she has spent over sixty years of her life, and Iris the 30ish granddaughter and great - niece. As the story unfolds, these three lives are forever entertwined. This novel unfolds a family secret that has been kept well-hidden until Esme is being released from the mental institute into the custody of her great-niece, Iris (who didn't even know she existed). I was disappointed in the ending, and I am still trying to figure out what happened.
A wonderful story of a family's journey through the Badlands of North Dakota in the quest to find their son and brother Davy Lands. Davy has murdered two intruders who were bent on harming the family. On the day of his sentencing, he escapes, and the family sets out on a journey to find him. This story, although it starts slow, quicky draws you into this family. A book you don't want to end.
This seemingly simple story of 2 boys growing up in 2 different generations in a small town in Canada erupts in an ending that is both tragic and triumphant.
Historical fiction based on the true story of the Boleyn family's struggle to gain the crown of England. They stop at nothing - using their two young daughters as pawns to pull the attention of the king away from his wife.
This book was a very good read. Although it started slowly, it quickly became a "can't put down" selection.
The author did a great job in this sequel to Silent Lies. Although I feel Silent Lies was the better of the two books, this is also very well written. The book initially starts slowly, but definitely picks up momentum as the story unfolds.
A story of the perseverance of the human spirit in the midst of the most difficult of circumstances. Book is well written and keeps your attention. However, I was disappointed in the ending.
The story itself is very good. However, it could have been told (very well) in about 1/2 the pages.
A very informative book about polygamy. The author successfully weaves the story of Brigham Young's 19th wife and a modern day 19th wife together.
An extremely well written book that I wasn't able to put down. It is a book that you want to keep reading but are sad to see it end. The writer is able to pull you into the lives of Anju and Sudha and draws you into a different world, different culture. The trials and joys they encounter touch your heart.
As a fan of Ken Follett, I thoroughly enjoyed the Fall of Giants. This story follows the lives of 8 main charactters as they interact in the times prior and during World War I. The only criticism I have is that near the end the details of the peace negotiations get a little lengthy. Overall, this was a great book. If you loved Pillars of the Earth, you will thoroughly enjoy this epic.
When I picked up this book for the first time, I did not have high expectations - the title didn't do much for me. However, as I began reading, I quickly was pulled into the story and loved every minute of it.
Once I started reading, I could not put this book down until I finished it. The writer draws you into the characters and makes you feel their fun, their joy, and their pain. Throughly enjoyable reading. One of the best books i have read this year.
After reading Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, I was very much looking forward to the publishing of this book. After all of the anticipation, the book was a disappointment to me. Although interesting, it was a very slow read - and rambling.
I usually enjoy long novels, so I was lookinig forward to reading this book - especially after all of the positive reviews. The book quickly captured my interest after the 1st 150 pages. It then quickly took a drastic downturn - remainder of the book was slow, boring, and unrealistic. A definite disappointment after all of the hype this book received. I was the only member of my book club to even finish the book.
Although the first chapter started a little slow, the book quickly picked and I was unable to put it down until it was finished.
I am a huge fan of John Grisham's books. So I greatly anticipated the release of Gray Mountain. The book was such a let down. There was nothing likeable about any of the characters. Book dragged on and did not have the normal Grisham feel.
I absolutely loved this book. I started the book on Friday night and I literally could not put it down. When I finished the book on Sunday, I was very sad to have the story end. It is so well written - that the writer draws the reader in - and you become one with the characters - drawn into the slower pace of life.
Kristin Hannah is one of my favorite authors and with this book she does not disappoint. The characters come alive in this book - and you hate to have the story end. In our life, it is hard to imagine the atrocities of World War II - however, Hannah does a great job of bringing these to light. Very thought provoking.
I was a bit disappointed in the first 1/2 of the book; however, the last 150 pages more than made up for the slow start. I just could not put the book down and finished it in one afternoon.
I didn't know what to expect when I started this book - but it grabbed my attention immediately. I was unable to put the book down - fabulous story line - great writing
Although the book lagged in the middle, I still felt deserving of 4 stars. 2nd half of the book moves at a very fast pace and pulls you into the lives of the characters. I still like Reconstructing Amelia better, but this is a very good book - very interesting.
Only criticism I have is that the book dragged in a couple of spots.
A seemingly simple story grabs the readers attention and doesn't let go until the last page is turned. Absolutely loved this book.
I loved this book. The story is totally different than what I expected. I loved the point of view the story was written from - and that it moved seamlessly back and forth from Germany in the 40\\\'s to the USA 2000. Provoked great discussions in the book club
Excellent read. Very hard to put down.
