My Reviews
Our book club had an intense discussion about this book; we didn't really like the main characters much (nor were we supposed to), but enjoyed discussing their why they behaved as they did, and the plot twists that compelled us to keep reading. All agreed the writing was outstanding. Sequel? We hope so!
I have read this book twice - once for myself and a year later so I could lead my book group\\\\\\\'s discussion. Both times, I cried at the end. The author touches all the major life themes of loss, love, trust, and betrayal. Our group had a spirited (and sometimes heated) discussion. Great choice for book groups!
There is no way to prove that heaven exists. Those of us who believe in an afterlife choose to have faith. Many of us, too, have heard accounts from friends and family members who experienced near death experiences that strengthened our faith. This author's account was rambling and not uplifting or affirming. Our book club managed to have a spirited discussion about it anyway!
The basis of this book was a newspaper article and that is what it should have stayed. The book was written AFTER the movie (which was mostly fictional) and dealt more w/making the movie than with the butler. Our members didn't get a sense of the real butler, Eugene Allen, or his life at the White House.
Elizabeth Gilbert has outdone herself on this one. It's fantastic - and I will read it again - all 500 pages. Everyone in my large book group of more than a dozen readers loved it and we all enjoyed a lengthy and lively discussion.
