My Reviews
Not one of my favorite books. Was a quick read, with a lot of adventure and thrills, but entirely unrealistic. Would make a great movie, but I feel the author tried to include too much in the book, and the action was very unrealistic. Didn't really connect with any of the characters, and the twist with the "spy" was obvious. While the premise of the book is an interesting one, I didn't particularly find it controversial enough to question my own personal beliefs; however, at least one book club member said that she had some difficulty reading the novel since it flew in the face of all that she believes.
I would not recommend this to other book clubs as a selection.
This novel was very well written and was read in less than two days! I just couldn't put it down, and had to find out what really happened on that cold dark night when the family was murdered. The novel opens almost 25 years after Libby's family has been slaughtered in what was deemed a satanistic ritual by her brother who has been convicted of the murder and is serving a life sentence. At this point in Libby's life, she is a depressed 32 year old woman who has no family, no friends, and now no money. In a bid to make money but still not actively engage in "real" work, Libby meets up with a man offering money for her to speak at an unconventional convention for "fans" of murders, a "Kill Club of sorts". As Libby goes on different quests posed by the "Kill Club" she begins to question events of that fateful night, and then questions her brothers guilt in the crime.
What Libby learns of herself, her family, and mostly about that night will keep you turning the pages of the novel. The actual events are eventually revealed at the end of the book, but the trip will have you questioning everyone's involvement.
This book was incredibly well written, but with a lot of large words that required looking up to understand what the author was trying to convey. Despite the wordy language, the book sticks with you long after you finish reading it.
The book begins slow, but about a quarter through starts picking up the pace, and you start to realize that you do not care very much for the narrator, and you start feeling bad for Kevin, the mass murderer. About 3/4s through, you begin to realize you don't really like anyone in the novel, but just can't stop reading to determine if Kevin will reveal his motive, his reason for killing his fellow classmates.
This book is very disturbing and will cause much discussion in a book club. I highly recommned it.
This novel is by far one of the best novels I have read in awhile. All of the characters are flawed people that you never particularly like, but may grow to pity. Despite this, I just couldn't stop reading to find out how the book ends. At first I began to suspect that foul play is involved in the disappearance of Amy, but then I got 1/2 way through the novel and WHAM, the author drops a HUGE bombshell, making me go back to re-read the first half of the novel. I was floored by the change in the direction of the novel, but LOVED it... the author is absolutely brilliant!! She depicts these twisted, dark, and flawed individuals in such a way that you begin to suspect that she has way more insight into these people than a sane individual should. If you enjoy reading a novel that keeps you guessing, and will have you staying up late into the night to read the next chapter, pick this one up. An awesome book for a book club!!
