My Reviews
This book has the feel of a true memoir, although a work of fiction. I really enjoyed getting into minds of each conjoined twin and seeing their individuality come through.
This book didn't have much substance to it. I felt more like a research paper than an insightful biographical work. Much of the text focused on the history of the indivuals supposedly "interviewed" rather than on Bob Dylan.
There was a lot I enjoyed about this book. The story was interesting, and I like the use of different voices telling the story. It took awhile to quickly identify who was speaking, and how that person fit in. However, I think that the characters weren't all that cohesive, and could have been pared down quite a bit. The book could have benefited by having fewer characters that were more developed. Overall though, I did like it.
I really enjoyed this book and found Greg Mortensen to be a remarkable person. Most of us just go about our daily lives being too busy to reach out very much. He goes to the extreme dedicating his life to building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Although it must be hard on his family to make those sacrifices required during his long absences, I admire all that he has accomplished. Having read a few books about that region in recent years, I also enjoyed the perspective shared on the rise of extremist Islam, and how education can combat terrorism in that context. This was an enjoyable read and I've already recommended it several times.
This book resonated very strongly with my work with dementia patients. I loved the different family dynamics that play out, as well as the fact that that author made sure that some of the reactions to this devastating disease were hurtful and insensitive. That's the reality. Although there were a couple parts I found to be rather far reaching, overall I felt that this was very insightful and a big help in understanding people who are unravelled by this desease.
