My Reviews
Loved the book. The title was very fitting as it took you into a crazy world, hard to believe, but very funny as the author did a great job picturing the world few of us know of.
Having been to a Chinese wedding in Shanghai, while not quite as opulent as this one, I could appreciate the bride wearing 5 dresses, a menu that was so huge you couldn\\\'t figure out where to start.
And the female back-biting, and intrigue was just plain funny! Having read of lot of heavy books lately, this one was perfect as a light, hilarious read.
I enjoyed this a lot. Good writing, kept me involved and interested throughout. The ending wasn\\\'t exactly what I had expected, but I liked that as well. I like when the author surprises you, but doesn\\\'t suspend reality either. Thought there were some good insights into society here in the USA.
I belong to about 7 book groups. We have already discussed this book in two of them. However, in others where we have not all read it yet as a group effort we still talk about it.
It seems as if the more you think and talk about it, the more seems to reveal itself about the book. It certainly made a lasting impression on everyone. The opinions on whether they loved or hated the book run the entire spectrum.
I loved the beginning, found the middle almost too graphic, but realized that again, like the beginning the writing just grabbed me. While many in the book groups did not finish it, mainly because of the length (it is 771 pages) and amount of time they allotted to reading it, I did and I plan to read at least the last 1/3 over again as I want to see how Ms. Tartt tied up all the pieces. Again, the discussion brought out some points about the ending I think I may have missed first time out.
I highly recommend this book for a book group discussion as it invokes some very spirited exchange of ideas.
Our book group was 100% having enjoyed and loved the book. Not everyone finished it, but we still discussed in a most interesting way. We felt the author did a great job with the character analysis and descriptions. We enjoyed the story structure.
While I didn\\\'t love the book and found it really hard to read, (from the standpoint of the topic, not the writing) I think we should read this book. I found it pretty incredible that educated, intelligent, professional women went along with the program to restrict their ability to have any freedom whatsoever. I found it scary to think that this could happen to us if we don\\\'t have watch carefully what we support and go along with. I had to put it down often because it caused me so much angst.
But I think we should read it.
