My Reviews
Our local library selected this for a book club read and since I hadn't had anything else picked out to read yet, I thought I would try it. I didn't care for the fact that every chapter - set in a different place and time - seemed to have a bad outcome for one of the characters in the book, a member of this family. I kept wondering when their LUCK would turn around. Halfway through the book, I contemplated quitting it, but I did eventually finish it. The last chapter of the book was the best, but perhaps I enjoyed that one the most because I was celebrating THE END. I did like the way it ended; there was HOPE for better luck in the future.
This was the first I've ever read of this author and I did like her book. I found myself confused in the first few chapters, flipping back to see if I had been introduced to each character yet, but once I had met them all, I liked it just fine. Loved the Mrs. Oliver character! Haven't talked to anyone yet that didn't care for the book.
Having witnessed Alzheimer's Disease first-hand with my grandmother, I thought that Genova did a fantastic job capturing it for others to experience it, too. Written from the perspective of the early onset Alzheimer's patient, it is interesting to see the rapid decline in thought process from beginning-to-end of the book. Suggest this to ANYONE touched by AD.
I didn't know if I would like an entire book - a composition of letters, but... I really DID like it A LOT! It was an interesting look at life in the 40's and a great way to get to know more about all of the characters. Clever.
I really enjoyed this book! What a fun, fresh perspective - telling the story from the dog\'s point of view. A fast read.
I saw an interview on the Today Show and scribbled the name/author down because I found \\\\\\\"her story\\\\\\\" to be so inspiring. Faced with a diagnosis of ALS, she LIVES her life in Joy. Interestingly, it isn\\\\\\\'t really a sad book, despite the (sad) diagnosis, but one that uplifts the spirit in a non-spiritual way. I LOVED THIS BOOK and loaned it to my mom immediately afterwards; we both keep telling people about this fantastic book!
Our book club picked this book and I must admit: it was not my favorite. It was a light-hearted, brainless, rather fast read. Somewhat predictable... disappointed that I purchased the book, instead of being able to check it out from the library.
Our library book club read this book. I had no idea that Louise was a real life person. The chaperone, however, is the FICTION part of this story. The secrets and lies keep the reader intrigued. I found myself wanting to learn HOWEVER WILL THIS END?
