My Reviews
There are so many things to discuss about the book, Room. The situations are unique, the characters ring true and their reactions seem real but are not predictable.
I had to set this book aside periodically because the subject matter was just too disturbing. The content was even more upsetting because it involved the misfortunes of a child. This book made Glass Castles look like a trip to Disney World. Informative about the Vietnam era, but not uplifting.
This book covers an interesting part of History, but was bogged down with too much detail. The over use of the pronoun "he" to refer to Cromwell made the prose difficult to follow. The sheer number of characters in the story, and the fact that many of them had the same names added to the confusion. If you are deeply interested in Thomas Cromwell, I'm sure there is some interesting insight in this book, but for the average reader, the detail is overwhelming.
There was no depth in this novel. The character development was minimal, and I didn't really care about the protagonist. The writing style is marked by a lack of punctuation and included quite a bit of dialogue in Spanish, both of which I found annoying,
The author uses the first person plural to poetically and effectively communicate the varied yet cohesive experience of an entire population of Japanese immigrant women. Well done!
No doubt that Beryl Markham led a remarkable life, but the narrative of this book lost the excitement of the story, and for me, failed to make me care about her very much. Seemed a chronological catalog of events more than a meaningful personal story.
